Memories
(2010)
Memories is a series of photographs created in November of 2010 for a show in the Colburn Gallery at the University of Vermont. Memories is based on the idea of simulacrum and fabricating memories. I found a box of family photos that I had never seen before in the Fall of 2010. The photos used in this series were all taken before I was born. Two were of my maternal family at what appears to be a wedding or funeral, two of television sets and two are abstract images possibly caused by a thumb over a lens or someone dropping a camera, forcing the shutter to release. The true reason behind the photos existence, I'll probably never know. I felt a sense of grief that I needed to resolve. By creating my own experience with these images I was able to recontextualize my original perception into something familiar. Memories was created by projecting these 3x5" family photographs with an opaque projector onto a screen and rephotographing them onto film which were then reprinted.
