In *Stars Exalt The Darkening Sky*, I turned NO/ Gallery (Ghent, Belgium) itself into the central image of a solo exhibition. I expanded a one-line poem by Stephanie Barber, *”Mysteriously stars continue to exalt the darkening sky,”* into a longer piece of prose and used it as a foundation to express a non-linear sense of time, dissolving human and cosmic timescales into one another.
Dense with reflections and silhouettes, the work presents a mirror-image of the gallery’s interior space superimposed on the street outside, illuminated by an early Carmelite church and the night sky. The piece was installed parallel to the storefront window it depicts, adding another layer, and many viewers expressed strong feelings of temporal dislocation while engaging with it.
The photo of the orange is titled after Eileen Myles’ poem, *Epic For You*.
